Open-Air Theater, Golan Heights

Open-Air Theater, Golan Heights

An abandoned quarry filled with scrap metal, a scar amidst a landscape of gentle slopes overlooking the Sea of Galilee. Rehabilitation of the site was a true metamorphosis, transforming a dumping ground into a gathering place for Golan residents; neglected space into a place of activity, hikes, social gatherings, rock concerts...
The rehabilitation program was designed around the spatial qualities of the site. The theater, engulfed by the topography, looks into the quarry space. The quarry wall serves as an impressive backdrop for gatherings and performances. We have highlighted the seam between the quarry and the natural slope of the hill with a promenade walk, which overlooks both the quarry and the scenic Galilee in the distance. Within the abandoned quarry we have created an entirely new, unmistakably artificial landscape, a place for things to happen.
